Decentralized Science (DeSci) is not just a technological shift — it's part of a much older movement rooted in the values of the Enlightenment, scientific pluralism, and open collaboration.
Emerging from the North-West of England, a region shaped by radical thought, cooperative economics, and pioneering industrial ingenuity, this project stands on the shoulders of early open societies — where knowledge was debated, published in pamphlets, and shared freely across borders.
We draw inspiration from both historical models of civic science and contemporary movements like Open Science, Citizen Science, and FAIR data principles. Today’s digital infrastructure, whether powered by Web3 or decentralized identity protocols like Tim Berners-Lee’s Solid, gives us a new opportunity to reclaim scientific knowledge as a public good.
